Arthurs Pass is 146km west of Christchurch. Travel into the heartland of the great divide the mighty Southern Alps, New Zealand’s highest mountain range regarded as having some of our best scenery. Arthurs Pass, with its evergreen indigenous southern beach tree forest is a truly magical alpine environment. Marvel at the view from the top of the Pass as you look down to a real feat of engineering, the viaduct 440meters long and 35meters high allowing road access from east coast to the west. There is a good chance you will have a close encounter with New Zealand’s mischievous mountain parrot the Kea. They never fail to humour you. This is a fantastic place to visit, the writer's favourite.
Hanmer Springs, is 135km north of Christchurch, is an alpine village set in a beautiful alpine spa environment surrounded by forest covered mountains and alpine rivers. The popular natural thermal pools, Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa, utilises the area's natural mineral waters to help rejuvenate the mind and body. They offer a luxurious, relaxing soak along with private spas and beauty treatments. Do not forget to bring your swim wear. Or you may prefer to take a jet boat trip up the Waiau River or explore this beautiful alpine town at leisure. On our return trip you may like to try wine tasting at some of our many North Canterbury wineries, the Waipara Valley is widely know for its sauvignon blanc and pinot noir.

A coastal village 180km north of Christchurch is renowned for whale watching and crayfish. Kaikoura has one of the most magnificent settings, where the mountains quite literally meet the sea. The drive around the Kaikoura coastline is very dramatic with a winding road that twists around the craggy rock formation's and through road tunnels. There are several places to stop for seal watching as they lie on the rocks below and Goose Bay gives you the perfect opportunity for a walk on the beach. With prior arrangement you can book a whale watching trip or swim with the dolphins .
AKAROA SIGHTSEEING FULLDAY
|
We travel to Akaroa over magnificent Banks Peninsula. Set in a beautiful sheltered harbour and overlooked by craggy volcanic hills. Akaroa was unofficially settled by the French who had intended to establish a French colony. This is evident by the architecture and number of local French street names. There are many attractions in this quaint harbourside village. You may like to visit the museum, explore the many art and craft shops and studios or you may just want to sit and relax by the sea with a glass of wine or coffee from the many cafes. Take a boat trip out on the harbour and enjoy this fantastic environment with the seals and birdlife or swim with the dolphins. We also have interesting places to stop on our journey. For example Barrys Bay Cheese, home of the original settlers dairy factory. You can sample the various cheeses they produce and export around the world.
